Our trading team markets pool grain in accordance with policy guidelines from the pool committee which comprises of 3 farmer directors, the Managing Director, the Trading Director and the Trading Manager. As a farmer-owned business the company is committed to help farmers achieve premium prices at a low cost whilst minimising the trading risks from bad debts, malpractice, quality claims and adverse price movements. The object of the pools is to consistently give better than average prices year on year.
Pool Marketing:
Pools
Pool marketing allows grain to be traded in an orderly manner by providing grain when it is needed by the customers and avoiding oversupply in quiet periods.
For grain sold in a pool the member receives the average price of all grain group sales of that commodity sold in that pool period minus the marketing fee.
Pool Commodities
All main line commodities can be traded through the Wessex Grain Pools including milling wheat, feed wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley (according to variety), feed barley, peas and beans.
Pool choices
Wessex Grain offer four main pool options, which relate to the period that the grain will be moved. The Long pool has three payment options to suit individual cash flow requirements.
Wessex Grain has strong relationships with key consumers which means it can offer the farmer a variety of different forward contracts and ‘buy-backs’, up to 2 years in advance. This allows farmers to take advantages of spikes in the market and take cover for when the market is suppressed aiding their budgeting strategy. The company is also small enough to personalize contracts to suit individual farmers and their situations. Our farmers are also provided with up to date market information and advice to aid decision making.
